Ravenna is famous for its mosaics. It was the last capital of the Western Roman Empire, capital of the Kingdom of the Goths and capital of Byzantine dominion in Italy. The magnificence of that period has left Ravenna the early Christian mosaics of the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia and the Neonian Baptistery, the mosaics of Theodoric age of the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, the Arian Baptistery and the Archiepiscopal Chapel and the Byzantine mosaics of the basilicas of Sant’Apollinare in Classe and San Vitale. These monuments, along with the Mausoleum of Theodoric, have been declared World Heritage by UNESCO
